Azienda Vitivinicola Principiano Ferdinando is a family winery located in Monforte d`Alba, Piedmont. Ferdinando joined his father, Americo, in the mid 90´s. Today the winery consists of around 20 hectares of vineyards. The most famous vineyards they have are the Boscareto, just below the famous Francia, in Serralunga, and the Ravera in Monforte. The farming is organic and Ferdinando believes strongly in biodiversity and natural balance. They put a lot of efforts to secure the best conditions for everything that grows and lives on their estate.

Nebbiolo is the main variety for the estate, but they also produce the traditional varieties Dolcetto, Barbera, Freisa and even the very rare Slarina. For their small production of Langhe Bianco, they use Timorasso, and for the Alta Langa, they use Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. The winemaking is traditional, the way Piedmont wines have been made for generations, and for the Barolos this means long submerged-cap macerations and elevage taking place in mostly older wood barrels of 20 to 40 hectoliters. Everything is spontaneously fermented, theres is little or no filtration and little or no sulphur. The wines are, even in the warmest vintages, always pure, fresh, and precise. Alcohol levels are refreshingly moderate, which is not the usual case in Piedmont these days.

Ferdinando Principiano was for many years known as a very talented young winemaker. Today we can say with certainty that he is one of the best, and the wines are increasingly in demand from wine enthusiasts, wine bars and restaurants around the world. From his no sulphur Dolcetto, called Dosset, being served at the hippest wine bars in New York to his single vineyard Barolos being rated among the absolute best wines from Piedmont. Well deserved.

If you ever visit Piedmont, we recommend that you rent a room at La Piazza Murazzano. A beautiful place and perfectly located to visit the area. It is owned by the Principiano family.
